Cobalt is a greater part of the cost of a lithium ion battery than the lithium but there is a great deal of work being done to reduce the amount used in batteries.

There is now a lithium battery recycling center in the US. A Canadian company was invited to open a plant to complement the one they had in BC.

Work is also being done to see if sodium batteries are a feasible replacement.

It all makes interesting reading watching the progress of battery technology. The car companies can see the future and are planning for the replacement of most, if not all, of their ICE powered cars with battery powered ones over the next few decades.
