By the engine numbers #139 its the West Bound Del Monte. The job was advertised SF to Monterey, lay over at Monterey, On duty the next morning Monterey back to SF.

You would put in the following time slips:

SF to Watsonville, 100 miles. Another time slip Watsonville to Monterey (10 miles,10.4 miles, 10.4 miles & 10 miles) and Monterey back to Wat. Jct., Wat. Jct to SF 100 miles. The time from Wat. Jct to Monterey and back to Wat. Jct was continues time, OT after 8 hrs.

That's the reason it went to the high seniority crews. An engineers minimum day was 100 miles.
( 8 hrs = 100 miles or 12.5 miles an hour. Overtime paid 18 3/4 miles per hour) This run paid
over 340 miles, before any OT between Wat Jct to Mont and back.

That is almost 3 and 1/2 days pay.

As far as sending them home, and then recalling them, I doubt it. These were assigned crews. Regular times on duty in SF and regular times on duty in Monterey. They have to make it in in order to come back the next day.

Now that you are really confused, pool freight was paid on miles run.( 152 miles SLO to Wat.Jct., OT after 12'10" on duty and 119 miles SLO to Santa Barb, OT after 9'31") Passenger was paid by miles run and OT after the scheduled running time.

I know that has all changed but this was the way back in the 70s until Atk took over.
