Neither UP nor BNSF train new-hires how to get on and off moving equipment these days. BNSF even considers the practice one of the "7 Deadlies". But you are encouraged to do it in an "emergency". Sadly, I think most new-hires would just hurt themselves trying.
I heard a rumor UP may bring it back as part of the "PSR" mandate though. There's at least a couple "generations" of rails out there that have no idea how to get on and off moving equipment properly so if UP brings it back, they are probably going to have to update this training film.
I miss it. If you do it right it's not as hard on your knees as many claim, and it can sure save your feet from a lot of wear and tear. I used to get 2 or 3 years out of a pair of work boots out there. Now I may get 6 or 7 months with all the stupid walking we have to do.
