Where I live a $9 billion tax / bond issue for transportation just failed. I didn't vote for it...... we already have a regional transportation district that collects significant tax revenue to fund light and commuter rail. Yes, the roads are falling apart but to come out and lay a $9 billion proposal in our laps to do something that should have been able to be routinely taken care of was just too much. Same with a $5 billion bond issue the school system wanted to "maintain roofs and HVAC systems". How in hell is this stuff that should be taken care of by the already massive amounts spent on the school system be paid for by a bond issue? Made no sense to me so I didn't vote for that either.
The regional transportation district taxes an area that was promised a fancy rail transit system. True, some of the promised system has been built but several outlying areas that still have to pay the tax have been told they will probably never get rail transit and that bus service will be the best they'll get. Hell, they had that before the tax increase! And a big chunk of the commuter rail system doesn't work right and still requires flagmen at all the grade crossings after almost 2 years since the thing opened for service. One section still hasn't opened although they have been running "test" trains (no passengers) on an almost full schedule for several months now. Flagmen at all those grade crossings too.
Do these entities that come to the voters asking for ever more money not realize how bad it looks when the money they have been given is foolishly squandered? 2 flagmen at every grade crossing for almost 2 years? Trains running back and forth for months but no one can ride the damn thing? (and no prediction of when it may open for passengers). I want to see them spend what they have more wisely before I'll acquiesce to giving them more.
