I don't think anyone has mentioned the effects on the driver.
Suicide is the most selfish thing a person can do,
It's 'screw my family and innocent bystanders'
As for the mousetrack, if a big truck stalls on the crossing, the driver ignored the signals, and nothing to be done save duck. If not, the DMU CAN stop in time
And it was true that PCC cars could accelerate and stop very quickly. It wasn't for emergencies however, it was to maximize schedule speed and minimize headway. Tests with actual people showed ladies in high heels could stay standing better than else with high deceleration , cuz they were on their toes.
