I doubt most people fly more than 2-3 times a year, and most of that is price-sensitive leisure travel. So I'd still be interested in what the per capita and per-passenger subsidies amount to.

The larger point is that there is no form of transporting people that is completely self-supporting. There is a place for passenger trains and people will use them if they meet the standard that most businesses run by: speed, quality, price...pick any two.
