Why would that make me sad? I would like to see a little bit of a shake-up, because I too read the audit report and was just as disappointed as you.

But this project is definitely still worth doing for $100B. The right-of-way alone is a hundred-plus-year investment for future times when high-speed rail will be as obsolete as a steam locomotive is today. The physical laws of motion will still be the same-- to move quickly, conveniently and in comfort you will always need a ROW that has gentle curvature and serves population centers.

If I had to tweak it, I would take direct routes through Tejon and Altamont with very aggressive grades (4 to 5%).
