I am against SMART. It is very poorly thought out. The figures don't lie - the commute business is falling off and there is absolutely no reason to think a 30 year trend is going to reverse itself. 6 years down the road everyone will see for themselves that this was not the right way to go. The stark fact is that there is hardly enough money to keep the existing buses running. Maybe they can run some tourist trains on the weekends that can command a high enough fare to break even, but Marin County does not like the idea of wine trains. That's not my fault.

NCRA-NWP is having to deal with a judge who is anti-rail. That's not my fault. It is the fault of the NWP that they let their railroad fall into disrepair. The NWP benefits from a small group of enthusiastic of supporters, which is great, but most of the the public are indifferent or view it as a relic. And there are a lot of motorist who remember waiting a long time at the crossings. As they say judges read newspapers too. The NWP lacks the wide public support it needs to defend itself against these legal challenges. SMART will be in the same position when it comes to competing for subsidies.

The NWP is paying the price for allowing operations to cease.
