In the SP Book of Rules, superiority of trains was prescribed by Rules 70 thru 73.
For regular trains, superiority was by (train order) Right, Class or (timetable) Direction.
For example, on the Santa Barbara Subdivision of the LA Division in 1965, freight trains 371, 372, 373, 374 and 375, and all regular passenger trains, were First Class trains. Eastward freight trains 830, 832, 834 and 836 were Second Class trains. Westward freight trains 829, 831 and 833 were Third Class trains.
