One time after Winterail, " The Boys " & I headed over Donner Pass to Reno, arriving in the wee hours of the morning. The Sundowner Hotel desk clerk was stunned as we asked "...for rooms facing the tracks." After reassuring her that we knew about the noise, she gave us the cheapest rate !!! This was before the Trench, when Espee trains would blow the horn continously ( or so it seemed ), from Sparks all the way to Verdi.
Also fondly remembered was a stay at The Union Plaza in Las Vegas, with a room facing the U.P. yard.
A more recent find, accidental at that, was being woken up by the 4449 Daylight rolling behind my room @ Motel 6 in Tigard, OR. Having stayed there several times before, I had never scoped out the area for any nearby tracks.
