If you ditch diesel you don’t need much tunnel length to shoot straight across Altamont. Modern EMUs can easily swallow 4+ percent grades even at high speed, cutting the tunnel length to 2.5 miles or so. The SETEC alignment from 2010, which CHSRA strenuously didn’t want to study lest it throw shade on Pacheco, was engineered less aggressively and needed a 4.2 mile tunnel over the pass.
