When being used, batteries do get warm, indeed. For buses, battery cooling is as important as cooling the power electronics (can be the same system).
Battery capacities used in various types of buses:
• "Classical" emergency power in trolleybuses: around 20 kWh
• modern 18m or 25m BTB sit IMC (Battery Trolley Bus with In Motion Charging): around 80 kWh
• fuel cell 18m bus: 120 kWh
• Proterra 12m publicity stint: 550 kWh
• typical 12m BEB (Battery Electric Bus): 330 - 550 kWh
• typical 18m BEB: 440 - 660 kWh
Energy requirements:
• typical 12m bus: 1.7 kWh/km on level road (calculated from Proterra data)
• typical 18m bus: 2.4 kWh/km on level road (source Kiepe)
• typical 18m bus under "real world conditions" and grades: 4-5 kWh/km (source VBZ)
Battery weight: around 1 t per 100 kWh
