How did that report ever get released at all? Somebody in the Current Administration is probably looking for another job right now. It's correct, though, and as noted toward the end of the story isn't at all unrealistic - looks at the median of current sea level rise projections.

Also interesting that Amtrak hasn't looked at the rest of their system. Though that kind of makes sense - the tracks aren't theirs, so somebody else (the freight and commuter railroads) is responsible for the tracks. But anything within 10' or so of current sea level is at risk of at least frequent storm surge and high tide inundation by 2100 even with just the current level of warming - glaciers are already melting, and as the ocean warms it expands.

Some of the projects that were proposed in LOSSAN plans, that are too expensive for current consideration, will be needed to keep that corridor running. For instance, the San Clemente and Del Mar tunnels. Essentially, any rail line (or other development) that's in low-lying coastal areas (which includes estuaries and deltas) will probably need to move or start building dikes. Think, for instance, downtown San Diego/Old Town (BNSF/Amtrak/Coaster); Elkhorn Slough, Santa Barbara, near Ventura (UP/Amtrak); many lines in the Bay Area and Delta; Santa Cruz Boardwalk/downtown. Then, there are the places where the tracks may be high enough, but are subject to coastal erosion as beaches vanish: La Selva Beach area near Santa Cruz, Del Mar Bluffs, parts of the UP Coast Line. Will be interesting to see what is important enough to relocate or protect, and what's just abandoned. Somehow, I don't see the NEC being abandoned, at least until the cities it's located in give up and move.
