Most of the bay is 1ft to 2 ft but the channel is very deep and the currents very stong as the tide comes and goes especially where the swing span is. In fact as the bridge was being built in 1910 construction crews had problems with newly set pilings washing away.
Current plans are to build a lift bridge to replace the swing span.
