I haven't found an answer yet but I suspect that the connection was with access curves off of Powell St. One pertinent question is whether the one way directions of Sacramento and Clay remained outbound on Sacramento and inbound on Clay over the years. I assume they used gravity to back down into and out of service as all the streets there have grades and they would have had to have the conductor get out to set the switch. And I assume the two ropes for the Sacramento line came out of Washington & Mason on up Mason in a conduit, the same one that is now used for the California cable.
I should have asked Charlie Smallwood 50 years ago but I don't remember if I did. I did not know the Sacramento St. cars were rebuilt from surplus Market St. equipment. They were longer than the California Street cars.
