The Vega is now actually an extremely rare vehicle (along with the Pinto and Gremlin).
The Vega was GM's best attempt at a truly "disposable" vehicle. The Vega was the pinnacle of engineering intentional "planned obsolescence". It was nearly impossible to do even "routine" maintenance on a Vega, without hours of labor, just to remove the stuff "in the way" (including "miles" of rubber vacuum hose, guaranteed to rot out and leak within hours of the warranty expiring, if not sooner in LA's ozone...), just to get access to routine maintenance points.
GM had finally managed to create a vehicle with no Kelly Book resale value, nor any remaining dependable operating life left, at around about 50,000 miles. or 3 years, and never beyond the time it took the poor schmuck's who bought one to pay off the car loan.
We used to un-load these "tilt-up" auto carriers of Vega's at the PMT auto facility at Valla. The tilt loading and unloading actually took up a lot more "time and space" "per vehicle" when compared to RO-RO loading, on more "compact" parallel loading tracks, twenty tri-levels at a time. Ditto with the luxury auto "containers". And, we all now see which solution seems to have had the most "competitive" advantages, the covered and secured tri-level rack.
I seem to recall that SP later used some of those luxury auto carrier "containers" at various locations, as MOW or signal storage....and maybe somebody has a photo of those somewhere...?
