SP&S Wreck Deschutes Canyon 1954

Recently read a story from a book titled "Tough Men, Tough Country" by Ellis Lucia. The story was about Fred Divine and his boat the "Salvage Chief" which made him infamous for his ship wreck recovery exploits. A portion of this story was devoted to his being called to help with the recovery of an SP&S diesel engine from the Deschutes River caused from a wreck after the lead unit hit a rock slide in the year 1954. Divine's boat a former navy LST was brought up the Columbia River which had aboard all his recovery tools. The railroad did not want to wait for a better time of year to recover the engine because it was believed two of the crew members bodies were trapped in the cab. It took over a month of work to recover the engine and one of the crew was found inside, the other crew member believed to be inside was later found farther downstream. The wreck site became known as "Boxcar Rapids".
The story mentions the weather was bad and engineer Ernie Barton sent the head brakeman Bill Dougherty back to the third trailing engine to watch the train shortly before hitting the rock slide and that command saved the brakeman's life. Every other story I noticed on line including Wikipedia, states that all the crew was lost with no mention of the fortunate head brakeman. So which is correct?
