I remember when the cars were being built that people worried about removing the vestibules from the new cars. In a standard railroad car, the vestibule is used as a crumple zone, which is why you aren't allowed to loiter there while the train is moving. It's all about money. They wanted to jam a few more passengers into the stair landing at each end of the cars...
