Some railroads just designated them by their on duty times. The Oh-Seven-Hundred, the Sixteen-hundred, etc. If two were on duty at the same time, they would add a word, The Oh-Seven-hundred Lead or Tramp.
On MRL (in Missoula), we had a switch crew on duty at 2230, but it got named after one of the industries it switched, Hawkeye Wood Shavings. Thus it was the Hawkeye. It was named by the crew that worked it, and it stuck.
In Laurel they are named by the part of the yard they work. Top of the East, Bottom of the East,Top of the West and Bottom of the West.
