In addition, there was a sign (large black box) hung above the traffic lanes that lit up and read "PREPARE TO STOP - TRAIN" a short distance before the crossing. I've always assumed that this crossing is why the branch local ran late at night.
Also, back in 1977, I saw where the Salt Lake Garfield & Western track heading toward the Saltair Pavilion site crossed Interstate 80 at grade, protected by nothing but a pair of crossbucks. I imagine that the line was not in use, but the track had yet to be removed. The Sacramento Northern briefly crossed the new Warren Freeway (CA 13) at grade in the Oakland Hills; the freeway was built shortly before the SN was abandoned, and nobody wanted to pay for a grade separation that would only be used for a short time.
