Thats actually if no segment of an assignment exceeds six hours. If there's any break at all between segments (no matter how short), an engineer can easily work alone twelve hours or nearly so. Examples would be Oakland-Merced-Oakland, or Oakland-Sacramento-San Jose-Oakland.
