As much as I like to ride trains, I have no delusions that rail can replace air for long distance travel. Beijing to Shanghai non-stop high speed trains average 190 mph.
A LA to New York train running at this speed would take 16 hours. A train departing LA at 6 am would arrive NY at 1 am. Given the mountains involved, and accounting for stops enroute, I doubt a transcontinental high speed train could average better than 140 mph, making a transcontinental journey overnight both directions.
Yes: civilization does ends at the New Jersey border, if you look northeast.
