I think the big problem with the Santa Fe proposed Tejon line was the timing. By the WWI era internal combustion was already coming on strong and the Santa Fe and the banks could foresee truck and auto competition.

Had they proposed it in the 19th century when rr's enjoyed a monopoly the financing would have been easily secured but LaLa was a sleepy village at that time.
