Its been over 30 years since I was certified on Electrics and the electrification and promptly forgot most of it since it was mostly technical stuff that Enginedriver's don't really care about, unlike knowing your Diesels. :)
Yeah we do have Regen braking, often on a Saturday there would have been only one freight out at a time and running most of the way back in regen, so no others going uphill to use the power generated. Some told me the power produced in regen is "dirty" and needed to be cleaned, similar to the home solar panel output, whether that is true or garbage I couldn't be bothered with finding out.
Those Tumbler Ridge electrics on the BCRail had ER Dynamics not Regen, what the reason for building them that way was I don't know, maybe because they were EMD?
Our NIMT is the 2 × 25 kV autotransformer system,a split-phase system which supplies 25 kV power to the trains, but transmits power at 50 kV to reduce losses. Don't confuse that with the 50 kV system. The current is mainly carried between the overhead line and a feeder transmission line instead of the rail. The overhead line and feeder are on opposite phases, so the voltage between them is 50 kV, but the voltage between the overhead line and the running rails remains at 25 kV. Periodic autotransformers divert the return current from the neutral rail, step it up, and send it along the feeder line.
