If long haul passenger service was profitable, they'd be clamoring to do it. Like so many things, the train itself is only the tip of the iceberg... For example, let's posit that we are going to run a crack train dqily each way between Seattle and New York. Transit time, about three days. So we need at least six full trainsets, and a couple of spares. We will be running, essentially, six or more full serive restaurants, and six otels every day. There are numerous stations, commissaries, car cleaning and maintenance establishments, etc., everyone of which needs staffing, heating and cooling and so forth. On board, you have to have attendsants, waiters, cooks, and the like... and a car to house them on each trainset... Yeah, this get very expensive, very fast... Getting the railroads to operate their own trains would llikely cost more than Amtrak.
