According to seat61.com, there is a daily train between Nanning and Hanoi Gia Lam station (that's how far the standard gauge goes).

Gia Lam is said to be a suburb of Hanoi, and probably not grand enough for Mr. Kim.

It is possible that the standard gauge yards may not provide enough space for that special train, and that could also explain the drive. And finally, there could have been acceptance issues for the train as well.

We will see how Mr. Kim leaves Hanoi.
