Railroad managers are famous for playing "kick the can". Sounds like this crew got caught in the middle of a game. It happens.
If the crew was smart, they would just follow the orders...to the letter, and follow the rules to the letter. Then when they have two hours left on the clock, notify the DS that they are DOL in 2 hours. By the time a relief crew is ordered and enroute, the entire railroad would grind to a halt and they would be making bank in limbo time.
The crew did their job asking to be relieved of tasks that they probably knew would take longer than the hours they had. After that, all bets are off. If, in the process, they discover a bad order switch, or another car or locomotive with a defect they can't correct, oh well.
I never whine over the radio. I just do what they say and make sure they have deep regret when I'm done.
