While I make NO excuses for violating Rule G, here are a couple memories from my college years along the Milwaukee Road. I
left the dorm each evening to watch # 19 The Arrow arrive in Mt Carroll
so I got to regognize the crews. One evening one of the 3 (C/R,
Brakeman, Flagman) was missing. When I asked, I was told he was so
drunk they had put him in one of the roomettes and would wake him to get
off in Marion IA where they changed crews.
On another opccasion, when boarding in Chicago to come back to campus I
was invited to hang out in the baggage car which also carried sealed
mail. (Throwing those sacks was serious exercise.) Before we even
cleared the throat at Union Station, the baggage man (sometimes
depending on who marked off he was a Brakeman) opened his brief case to
offer me a taste of Hennessey, I believe it has been ever thus.
