They rang well until the clapper mechanism wore to the point of being out of adjustment.

Upper blade: red, square end = home blade. Down, or green = block unoccupied, proceed at maximum authorized speed. Up or red = block occupied, stop before passing signal. The presence of a number plate meant "proceed at restricted speed after stopping".

Lower blade: yellow pointed end = distant blade. Up or yellow = proceed at medium speed prepared to stop for the next home signal because it is at stop. Down or green = proceed at maximum authorized speed, next home signal at proceed.

The positions of both blades taken together make one aspect. This is the SP practice, other RRs using lower quad semaphores were similar.
