Each SDP40F had two steam generators. The number of steam generators On Line depended on how much steam needed to be supplied to the train (depending on the number of cars, weather, etc.). The steam generator water was not trainlined between units, so having both steam generators On Line in the same unit used an enormous amount of water, and it was possible to run out of boiler water in that unit. No water = no steam. The preference with a two-unit consist was to have one steam generator On Line in each unit.
