The basic "standard" weight for an EMD 6-axle 40 series was about 180 tons, anything heavier had options and/or ballast.

CSX held onto the 180 ton range for many years. I can remember M-K stripping ballast for SD40 units being rebuilt as SD40M-2 for CSX, and then taking CSX trade ins and adding ballast for Utah Ry. rent-a-wreck leasors.

Most Amtrak engines are expected to operate anywhere in the US, various cab signal arrangements and Plate C clearance as well as lower weight for that era.
