Coast Starlight to detour via Tehachapis: 24/26/29 October

The Coast Starlight (11/14) will detour via the Tehachapis again on 24, 26 and 29 October as well as probably five additional but as of yet unspecified dates in November.

Unlike the June detour, this one will operate via the ex-S.P. line in the valley due to congestion on the BNSF line of the San Joaquins.

Due to the shorter running time in the San Joaquin Valley (vs. the Coast Line) the arrival times for trains 11 and 14 in Los Angeles and Sacramento are shown as 6:15 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. respectively. Train 14 will hold in Sacramento until 11:59 p.m. in order to catch up with the normal schedule northbound to the Pacific Northwest.

You will see these times now in Amtrak.com availability responses for these three dates. Conversely if a request is made for availability for any city-pair that involves an intermediate city not served due to the detour one will not see service for the Starlight. (Example: Santa Barbara-San Jose, Los Angeles-Oakland, etc.)

The detouring train will not make any intermediate passenger stops between Los Angeles and Sacramento, only a crew change in Bakersfield.
