And those manned helpers saved the day many times by assisting other trains that had engine failures (added as an extra "point helper"), assisted in train separations and minor derailments, even with fires of both tunnel and vegetation. SP knew exactly how valuable those helpers were but the bean-counters at UP only see the expense side of things, never the benefit.
