It certainly depends on one's situation. I have a bus at the corner that runs every 12 minutes to BART, taking eight minutes. I have a checked bag that converts into a backpack and I bring all the important stuff in an ataché case. This is enough for two weeks of travel. As I am over 65 I can use my senior Clipper card to get a 62.5% discount on the BART trip to the airport.

My bag gets checked to the long distance station (fernbahnhof) Lufthansa office at Frankfurt Airport and I'm away. The timing of the Lufthansa flights avoids rush hour, mid-day out, post rush back.
