I didn't have my DL yet when it opened but later, you couldn't afford to tolls. The bridge was 75 cents one way, later up to $1.25. It was cheaper to either drive around via 101-37 to Richmond/ Oakland or pay the 25 cents on the Golden Gate and 25 or 35 cents ? on the Oakland bridge.

I remember that the "Bridges" in the City were supposed to be free after they were paid for.
I was driving when the GGB cost 45 cents (all one way) then down to 35 cents and then 25 cents. Then they went to 50 cents for a round trip and up & Up.

One winter I was driving our 45'bus down to So Cal from Oregon, towing our car. We got to the GG toll bridge and they wanted almost $25. I told her all I had was $10 cash. (they refused credit cards, checks (or my wife). I told her I used to live in Marin and back then it was 25 cents. She then smiled and said, .." this trip is on the State of California, take off.".

That was when gas was cheap. Gas wars in Marin were down to 19 cents a gallon in the 50s & 60s. Got a picture my grandfather took at Fairview Ave and 101 in Goleta and it was around 14 cents.
