When I drove LTL Doubles for Conway Western Express, I found out ( the HARD WAY ) that my CalTrans Bridge card was NOT honored on the Golden Gate Bridge. Coming South out of Rohnert Park, dispatched with a set of empties to San Jose ( I would be swapping them for H-P loads ), I figured: Why not take the direct route ??? Upon arrival at the GGB toll plaza I was informed : " We don't take that card here." Sooo... I had to pay up the $25 Bucks cash ( Five dollars an axle ), then turn in the receipt at my home domecile in Irvine. Linehaul pissed & moaned about the fare, as the other Bay Area bridges only charged $2 Dollars per axle at the time !!!
It remains my only trip across Golden Gate Bridge in a Tractor - trailer(s). I did get a few stares while making the right turn from Lombard onto Van Ness , though with a set of empty doubles ( they bend in the middle ) it was no big deal for me. Hell, the right turn from Army Street onto Arkansas St with a loaded set for the San Francisco yard was much worse !!!
