As someone who worked on NAFTA border crossing issues down in the Imperial Valley in the years after 9/11, back when there were a lot of remote crossings (it's all fenced and patrolled, on all of these sections of the border now), so remote crossing have dropped off. Most of the so-called "asylum seekers" actually show up at the border crossing, in San Luis or Algadones, where they can apply for "asylum" (mostly now days from Central America's crime riddles corrupt "failed states" and not Mexicans). And, that is where these folks are processed and/or incarcerated.
I've railfanned and worked on the RR in way more dangerous places than Yuma. Both the CA and Arizona sides are perfectly safe from my experience. Don't get shot or runover by the drunken offroaders though, as that's a more real danger, and often a bigger concern for the Imperial County Sheriff. My own experience from working for 20 years in and out of Yuma, is that you're way more likely to die from the boredom of being there.
