Well, the oil fired steam locomotives, yes. That was the cheapest "oil" fuel available back then, prior to the discovery of plastic, and the metro-chemical industry.

Nope. back in the day, Bunker fuels were pretty much used right to the end of steam. Then Bunker fuels were continued in use on the UP gas turbine units, until their end.

The main issue with #2 diesel is; seriously uneven heating throughout the firebox of a large main line steam locomotive. Thus the development of weeping/leaking stay bolts throughout the firebox.

Only one burner, i.e. the one from 3985, which always worked VERY well.
