That same year, SP took delivery of 10 SDP-45's from EMD. I rode the Coast Daylight from San Jose to Los Angeles in June, 1970 with one of these units pulling a 15-car train. Solo. The only time I ever read about SP placing two of these units on the same train was when an SP business car was bringing up the markers of a long train. SP used to add an FP7 unit with steam boiler to provide steam heat for the entire trip as the 3200 units did not have large steam boilers and would run dry before the trip ended. Were these units run solo because SP overestimated their power, or because (Heaven forbid!) they just didn't give a damn about it?
BTY: No. 98 was two hour late into Los Angeles on that day.
