So, explain how the Southern managed to carry cars of coal with them on their 4501 and other trips, and even built a special conveyor car to move coal from the hoppers into the tenders.
Not that that would make any sense to duplicate on UP. People overlook or have conveniently "forgotten" that after the 1982 trip to Idaho and Utah that caused lineside fires all over place, 3985 was restricted by top management to operating between Cheyenne and Laramie ONLY.
That restriction was not lifted u till 3985 was converted to oil.
And yes, it is much cheaper and easier to handle and burn oil than coal.
