I chased the very last excursion of 3985 fueled by coal. There was high-railer following the train across Sherman Hill in both directions. They were there to stop and extinguish any lineside fires set by cinders from the locomotive. That was the stated reason for the conversion at the time. That, and the ease of refueling anywhere and at anytime that an oil truck could meet the train.
The Big Boys were equipped with a spray nozzle at the top rear of the tender that could spray water over the first couple of cars and the right-of-way to cut down the chance of fire. enginemen were loathe to use them, however, because they consumed water that could be used instead to make steam, water that never seemed to be in ample supply on those thirsty giants.
