In all of the hand wringing about passenger service to small towns,
what about all those towns that the trains pass through without
stopping?
What kind of irreplaceable service is that?
Further, for every small town that Amtrak "serves", there are dozens more
that Amtrak does not serve or run anywhere near. In fact there are a few
entire states Amtrak doesn't serve or run through.
Following the "logic" in the argument, why didn't all those little burgs
dry up and blow away in the 1960's when passenger trains were dieing left
and right? In fact, some of those towns grew.
I see it as a straw man argument.
