4014 weird chain drive mechanism?

On the engineer's side, there's this weird chain-drive mechanism. I don't know enough about the parts to be able to state exactly where it is, but it looks like it's in the area of the reverser control for the front engine.

Anybody know what this is? Is it part of the original engine, or is it a modern-day kludge?
