We know the source of the insistence on Pacheco, but I am thinking those notables may be coming up against some equally heavy-hitters, namely BART-MTC. But with the difference that the latter do not just want no Pachecho; they really would prefer no HSR in the Bay Area at all.
Why? Simple; BART and CAHSR would be in direct competition for state and federal dollars. And you know bechtel gauge can really go thru some billions in short order, especially if you are talking new tubes under the Bay. BART is already having to cope with its arch-enemy Caltrain electrification.
Now if the BART empire could get its hands on ACE that might bring some peace in the valley and connection to the real Valley via Altamont.
Laugh all you wish and flame at will, but AFAIK BART remains the pet of the Bay Area officialdom and corporate establishment. And in the CAHSR truncation I perceive the hand of our old friend Willie Brown. Our Guv seems to have next to no real interest in anything transport so I suggest he is relying on his long time mentor for advice. And slick Willie is joined at the hip with BART-MTC, which at the very moment is trying to score another $25mil from the feds and it probably will easily do so as to not look like Ca. is getting turned down on everything willy-nilly.
