BUGX: What’s the Point?

A lot of West Coast railfans have probably seen BUGX - Bruggere and Monson Locomotive Inc. engines running around on various shortlines in recent years (1922 on NWP and 1322 on the SMV both come to mind). There’s a wide variety of locomotives stored/rotting away in Turlock, Willits, Stockton (at the Port/CCT supposedly...?) that appear to have no prospects of ever running again.

So, what is the point of BUGX? Lease and operate locomotives for prospective CA shortlines or is there a bigger goal in mind (i.e. an eventual museum/excursion operation)? With ex-SP Cadillacs, an F40PH, and UP SD40’s in the collection, it’s quite a diverse roster!

Just wondering out loud as there always seems to be a certain mystique around the business.
