I'm all for using technology to railfan. Those of you who live elsewhere in the country and cannot easily get to a particular location are right, sites such as Google Earth can make our hobby much more enjoyable.
I'm originally from the Philadelphia, Pa. area, but now live outside Portland, Ore. I can visit the Brooklyn Roundhouse or the Vancouver, Wash. Amtrak depot any time, but I can't simply board a plane to Philly and camp out by the Northeast Corridor or the Strasburg Railroad, as much I might want to. Using Google Earth to spot Acelas along the NEC or listening to scans on the Railroad Radio website greatly improve my railfanning experience.
