IMHO it were the SP what done it. Remember Bechtel promised exotic in 1962, vactrains, etc. and then they came up with supported duorail in desperation, way too dangerously close to what had just been ripped up and compatibility and possible interoperation.

And also remember fans at the time were so excited at the prospect of a new electric railway they tended toward the benefit of the doubt and looked the other way. Big mistake for the future, just like HSR via stupid Pacheco and Palmdale.
