No answer to your question.
However, seeing your observation, last Thursday, an empty grainer went by MP93.5 on the Stampede sub; one unit only. I thought of it as odd and forgot about it until I saw you post. I didn't think anything went with only one unit. Same amount of cars; 100+. But no second unit and no DPU.
As I write this, an empty grainer is going by the window of my house. It is a "standard" 2+1 as I listen to the DPU fade Eastbound.
