I sailed on the Lurine in June of 63 as a musician in the band. It was the Matsonia renamed LLurline and was ot's first trip so named. The old lurline wore out so they replaced it.The Matsonia was a 1946 Alameda hull which was originally a troopship used in the Korean conflict. It could only sail from SF to Honolulu to LA(Wilmington), back t Honolulu to SF. Why? Because they put an additional two top decks and s swimming pool n the main deck. They had to pour concrete in the bilges to compensate for all the additional weight above the deck. They had to provide space for accommodating the passengers with food and such so they reduced the fuel capacity (Bunker C) thus its range was reduced considerably. This is why It didn't sail the same routes in the South Pacific as did the more modern Monerey or Mariposa. It did however make inter Hawian island cruses twice a year. I heard that the Lurline the Matsonia replace was a luxury liner built in the grand manor for elite cruse passengers before air travel became popular to the islands before the war. WWII that is. The Masonia was tired too. I t
recall when sailing on the American President lines Wilson ( In the band) that we saw her at sea coming back from Honolulu after being repaired. It was uncommon for the two to pass by each other especially at night.
What does this have to do with trains. It's a stretch. They used steam for propulsion.
