Here's a link to bear vs train fatalities in Glacier Park Montana.

When I lived in Essex during the mid-1980s, train vs bear fatalities were common as the bears would scavenge around the leftover grain spread out trackside due to the fairly regular train derailments. I remember seeing quite a number of "drunk" bears after eating fermented grain - unfortunately, after to much to drink, they wandered out onto the tracks. Since then, if there is a grain spill, it is handled better - all the grain is vacuumed up and the trackside cleaned to prevent unnecessary bear/train contact.
Bear/train encounters will probably continue even with precautions - I suppose it would the "deer[bear] in the headlight" syndrome.
Talk to ya later,
Dale Jones
